well-draining soil, but is shade tolerant with exceptional hardiness and will thrive as a spreading thicket. Once-blooming spring or summer for a period of several weeks. It is best to prune right after flowering is finished. Brought to the USA from Russia by Niels Ebbsen Hansen, 1906.

ruffled flowers that look like apple blossoms grow with

Found in, and named for, Arcata, California, this rambling rose may voluntarily root wherever it touches the ground. Bears masses of light pink, very double globular
shaped flowers that have a strong fragrance and will repeat bloom in sporadic flushes later in the season.
Grows to 15’ tall by 15’ wide (or more.) Prefers full sun and rich, well-draining soil and well-composted garden loam. Arcata is a vigorous, disease-resistant climber for a
fence, arbor, or trellis.

Awakening
A sport of New Dawn climbing rose, Awakening reaches a height of 8-14’ with a width of 8-10’ and has abundant clusters of large, light salmon-pink, fully double flowers
(twice the number of petals as New Dawn) that are sweetly fragrant and bloom in flushes throughout the season. Prefers part to full sun and well-draining soil. Can be grown on trellises, pillars, trained along fences, or
allowed to fountain on its own. This rose was lost in
commerce but was re-discovered by Peter Beales in 1990.

Belle Vichysoise
This stunning climbing noisette produces light blush-pink to
deeper pink with violet highlights 2-3” diameter flowers in
double cluster form. They are fragrant and will have
occasional rebloom throughout the season. Grows 13-18’ tall
by 8’ wide and is nearly thornless. Foliage is a lovely blue-
green which pairs well with the soft pink blooms. Prefers full
sun and loamy, well-draining soil with regular watering. Bred
by Francais-Andre Robert, France, 1858. Introduced in
France by Louis Leveque as ‘Belle Vichysoise’ in 1897.

Cecile Brunner/Owen Family Plot
A sport of the shrub Cécile Brünner, this climber grows up
to 18’ tall by 9’ wide. It has small pink very double flowers
that form pom-poms with a diameter of 1-2”. Blooms in a
single early summer flush with scattered repeat blooms
throughout the season. Moderate fragrance. Tolerates
shade and poorer soils and is very disease resistant.

Champney's Pink Cluster
Clusters of small, light pink double flowers have one of the
sweetest perfumes in the rose world. Blooms throughout the
growing season. Vigorous, has attractive foliage and is
almost thornless. An old Southern antique rose to use on a
fence, trellis, or pillar. Grows 15’ tall by 8’ wide. Plant in full
sun in moist, well-drained soil. The ancestor of the noisette
roses, the original seedling was found growing in the garden
of John Champney of Charleston, South Carolina, 1811. At
Old City Cemetery, it can be found in the Cato Garden.

Elie Beauvilain
Clustered flowers of an unusual light coppery-pink color with
slight red veining are large, double (17-25 petals) and have a
scalloped bloom form. Elie is a very vigorous rose, blooming

in the fall. Climbs 10-15’ tall by 6-8’ wide on strong, arching
canes that can be trained on pillars, trellises, or arbors.

highlights, and age to cream. Gruss an Aachen is believed to
be the original rose that began the Floribunda class. Blooms
are very full (41+ petals) clustered, 3” in diameter, and are so
prolific that they nearly cover the 3’ tall by 3’ wide bushy
plant. Mild, sweet fragrance, minimal thorns. Shade tolerant.
Prefers full sun and loamy, well-draining soil. Bred by L.
Wilhelm Hinner, Germany, before 1909. At Old City
Cemetery it can be found in Sections J and M.
